Thanks to everyone who came to our AGM on Saturday. The wide-ranging discussions at the conference demonstrated a determination amongst delegates and members to oppose the war in Ukraine but also to oppose the threat of further militarism and war coming from our government and its allies.
There were also serious discussions about the war in Yemen, the situations in Palestine and Afghanistan, and the dangerous foreign policy of the Biden and Johnson administrations.
The main resolution on Ukraine, proposed by Stop the War’s officers, was passed overwhelmingly with only 9 votes against. It reaffirmed the campaign’s opposition to Russia’s invasion, calling for a ceasefire but also for de-escalation and peace talks rather than pouring weapons into Ukraine and making a prolonged war more likely.
It also opposed NATO expansion which has helped to create the conditions for the present conflict. The British government has been one of the most enthusiastic for more arms spending and sanctions.
The conference also discussed the impressive growth of Stop The War over the last year. Hundreds of thousands have watched our online events on zoom, thousands have been involved in our campaigns and nearly 1200 people have joined Stop the War as members.
A new steering committee was also elected and conference heard from guest speakers in an opening rally with Riccardo la Torre (Fire Brigades Union), Professor Paul Rogers, rapper-activist Lowkey and myself. Jeremy Corbyn rounded off the day with a video message and chair Shelly Asquith highlighted future activities including the International Day of Action against the war on Ukraine on 7th May.
In peace and solidarity,
Lindsey German,
Stop the War Convenor
