Billingham old mines as Possible Dump Site

Posted: 28th April 2022

A Teesside MP has asked the Government to guarantee Billingham’s old anhydrite mines won’t be used as a “dumping” ground for nuclear waste. The empty maze of underground tunnels have gone on the market, with the current owner claiming the vast site could be used for “waste materials in a non-reactive environment”. The site has been disused for decades but several years after it closed in 1978, the Conservative government at the time wanted to use the mine for disposal of nuclear waste.
