Liz Truss: A Willing Warmonger

Posted: 6th September 2022

Stop the War Coalition

One of the most militaristic Prime Minister’s in history has been replaced by another. While we must celebrate the back of Boris Johnson as he exits in disgrace it’s impossible to be positive about the prospects for peace under Liz Truss.

The former Foreign Secretary has spent 2022 bleating out provocative threats to Russia and China whilst promising huge hikes in military spending during the most severe squeeze on living standards in decades. She’s a danger at home and abroad.

The international picture is incredibly volatile and we need a Prime Minister who will seek to de-escalate tensions around the world, particularly in Ukraine. Truss is not that PM, so it falls to the anti-war movement to continue to call on the government to stop talking up war in Ukraine and throw its weight behind a negotiated peace.

In order to do that we need your support. Last week we launched our 2022 appeal for £30,000 so we can intensify our calls for peace and sanity in a more and more dangerous world. Please give generously and support us as we campaign to stop the race to war.

Truss is promising a huge increase in military spending just at a time when millions are facing misery from fuel and food poverty. She promises tax cuts to her rich friends but this increase to 3% of GDP would mean the equivalent of 5p in the £ on income tax.

This would be the highest level of ‘defence’ spending since the Cold War arms race of the early 1950’s. We don’t need another cold war, let alone a hot one.

Instead, we should be trying to achieve peace in Ukraine, which would do a great deal to end the energy crisis. While Truss is prepared to hand over money to arms dealers and warmongers, she is refusing even the most basic support for the millions of workers who can’t afford to heat or eat.

Her priorities are clear and we should do everything possible to oppose them. To sustain our work and continue to grow we need your help. Every donation, however small, makes a big difference.
