Making the Case for Peace in Ukraine

This week’s Stop the War fringe meetings at the Labour conference are proof that the anti-war movement refuses to be suppressed both inside and out of the party. Despite a Labour member being suspended for speaking out for peace inside the conference the turnout and reception that we received during our time in Liverpool show that the public’s appetite for peace in Ukraine and elsewhere is fervent.

Jeremy Corbyn, who spoke at our main fringe on Sunday, said:

“Our work must be to help to bring about a peace process. If it’s possible for Ukraine, Turkey and the United Nations to come to an agreement with Russia to allow grain to be exported, then they are obviously all talking to each other, so it must be possible to come to at least a ceasefire and then to look at ways of going forward for the future. The alternative is pretty grim for everyone.”

StWC convener Lindsey German said

“We were determined to intervene at Labour conference precisely because of what Keir Starmer did in March by basically saying you couldn’t be part of Stop the War if you were a Labour member. Britain is one of the chief supporters of this war, and that tells you something about a country that is prepared to see its own citizens going hungry and going cold but is prepared to send endless weapons to Ukraine.”

Our second event at The World Transformed, We Need to Talk About NATO, was a much needed and insightful analysis of the aggressive role of the world’s largest military alliance featuring contributions from Andrew Murray, Lindsey German, Declassified’s Matt Kennard and Mohammad Asif from the Afghan Human Rights Foundation.

All in all the message coming from Liverpool was that we must keep pushing for peace by pressuring the government and its faithful opposition to do exactly that!
