War In Ukraine / NATO

  • Jonathan Steele writes on the need for the same kind of “true statecraft that ended the Cuban Missile Crisis in order to avert nuclear war over Ukraine.

  • The IAEA said Saturday that external power has been returned to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

  • The Wall Street Journal reports that the US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan held secret talks with Russian officials in order to reduce the chances of a nuclear conflict. Read more on Reuters.

  • China’s Xi Jinping and Germany’s Olaf Sholtz agreed that greater cooperation is needed to end the war in Ukraine with both leaders saying they both “jointly oppose the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons.” Scholtz visited China on Friday – the first G7 leader to meet Xi since the pandemic.

  • Nuclear fuel from Russia passed through Finland on Sunday while en route to Slovakia. Local police also responded to reports of a drone being spotted at the airport.

  • Nature has a piece on the regular shelling at Zaporizhzhia and the need for an expansion of international treaties to ensure the safety of nuclear plants during war.

Trident

  • Lockheed Martin has been awarded a £581.2 million contract to produce more Trident nuclear missiles for the US Navy.

UK Nuclear Energy

  • Nuclear Free Local Authorities, the Blackwater Against New Nuclear Group (BANNG), and the Bradwell B Action Network (BAN) have called on the government to seek an early end to Chinese involvement in the development of a new nuclear plant at Bradwell in Essex.

  • City AM has a short item that mentions Sizewell C in the search to fill a £50 billion gap in the government’s finances.

  • The Observer has an editorial with its view on the news for Britain’s urgent need to commit to nuclear power.
