Fusion: What’s it really about?
Our four articles this week - by M.V. Ramana, Linda Pentz Gunter, and Stéphane Lhomme (in French and in Englishtranslation) - take a look at the reality behind the headline-making fusion “milestone” announced last week. Far from an energy “breakthrough”, its purpose is to serve the nuclear weapons sector. The bluster around even such a small step is designed to secure the “winning” lab continued (taxpayer) funding. Any talk of fusion as applicable to our energy needs is pure fantasy, remaining still decades away if achievable at all, far too expensive, and unsuited to the smaller, decentralized energy sources we will need then (and are developing now). The nuclear power industry’s economic demise is terminal but it’s desperately clinging to life by falsely positioning itself as a climate solution. We will all pay the price - in health and safety as well as financially—if we allow nuclear power to continue. Please support our year-end fundraising campaign as we continue our work to shut nuclear power plants and block new reactors and illegal and environmentally unjust radioactive waste dumps.
