CAAT goes to court!

Posted: 2nd February 2023

Despite a previous Court of Appeal ruling in CAAT’s favour – which found that the government’s licensing decisions on arms to Saudi Arabia were ‘irrational and therefore unlawful’ – the UK government has continued to issue licenses to export arms for use in Yemen. Since the start of the war, more than £23 billion of arms have been sold to the Saudi led coalition: the consequences have been appalling, with 8,983 civilians killed in air raids fuelled by these weapons.

We are therefore back at the High Court this week. The Government faces a judicial review to hold it accountable for these dreadful decisions. The hearing starts Tuesday 31st January. If you are in London, you can join us outside court tonight, Monday 30th for a solidarity vigil, or during the day on Tues 31st at the court. More details via the CAAT Events page.

You can help in a couple of ways:

1. Email your MP!

If you have not done so already, please email your MP now to demand they take action in Parliament for Yemen. The UK Government needs to hear from MPs that arms sales to the Saudi-led coalition are wrong, break the Government’s own rules, and need to stop immediately.

2. Join the Twitter Storm!

If you have Twitter, you can tell Ministers directly that they need to stop these weapons sales.

What you can do Twitter Storm 31st January 2023 1200 - 1400 Who Secretary for International Trade KemiBadenoch Prime Minister RishiSunak Foreign Secretary JamesCleverly Message Stop the illegal sale of weapons to the Saudi- coalition solidaritywithyemen stoparmingsaudi If you dont have Twitter you can also tag them on Facebook and Instagram

You can follow developments in the court case via the hashtag, #CAATgoestoCourt (reporting restrictions allowing)! We expect the case to run for several days but note from Wednesday onwards the court will be closing the public gallery while it considers secret evidence from the UK Government.

With your help, we will keep the pressure on!

Thank you for your continuing support!
