Almost a year has passed since Russia invaded Ukraine, and the peril to the country’s nuclear power plants has only got worse. We look at what could still happen. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s reckless response to these risks is to order two more - American - reactors.
Persistent nuclear danger
Ukraine’s four nuclear power plants, and especially the giant 6-reactor Zaporizhzhia site - are now in even more danger than when the war began almost a year ago. The likelihood of an attack, whether deliberate or accidental, has increased dramatically, while loss of the electrical grid and the terrorizing of workers add to the chances of a major nuclear disaster. A reckless response
Despite the obvious dangers faced by Ukraine’s nuclear reactors embroiled in war, the government has decided to order two more - from Westinghouse. Ukraine even suggested the reactors would be operational by 2032 and cost a mere $5 billion a piece, an absurd prediction given Westinghouse’s lamentable track record in the US. READ MORE
