Need some inspiration? The Nuclear Resister had a wonderful celebration on Zoom of 42 years & 200 issues of the newsletter (with wonderful stories, photos, songs, remembering nuclear and war resisters who have died, actions to take and more). These are challenging times for sure – so we thought a little celebration of our history might help brighten the way ahead.

* American activist in German prison for nuclear weapons protest
------------

Amidst heightened nuclear tension between NATO and Russia in Europe, U.S. peace activist John LaForge entered a German prison on January 10 to serve 50 days in jail for protests against U.S. nuclear weapons stockpiled at Germany’s Büchel Air Force Base. He’s the first American ever imprisoned for a nuclear weapons protest in Germany. He was convicted of trespass in Cochem District Court for joining in two “go-in” actions at the German airbase in 2018. One of the actions involved entering the base and climbing atop a bunker that likely housed some of the approximately twenty U.S. B61 thermonuclear gravity bombs stationed there.

* Two women lock on at UK’s Trident nuclear sub base
------------

Margaret and Willemien locked-on in the road at the North Gate at Faslane Trident base in Scotland on January 22. Their action was in celebration of the second anniversary of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons coming into force, and to peacefully protest against the UK government’s intention to retain and proliferate Nuclear Weapons of Mass Destruction. Following the work of the police cutting crew, after about five hours the two women were taken into custody and then released.

* Irish peace activists acquitted on criminal damage charge
------------

The trial of two Irish peace activists, Edward Horgan and Dan Dowling, ended on January 25 at the Circuit Criminal Court in Dublin after a trial that lasted ten days. The men had been arrested at Shannon Airport in 2017 after writing “Danger, danger: don’t fly” on an American naval plane. They were charged with trespass and criminal damage for their protest of the U.S. military’s use of the airport in violation of Irish neutrality. When they finally got their day in court, the jury acquitted them of criminal damage. They were found guilty of trespass and ordered to pay €5,000 each to a women’s refuge.

* Italian pacifist spends 7 more months in prison
------------

Italian pacifist Turi Vaccaro, known for his principled noncooperation with war making, police and the courts, was arrested and again imprisoned on December 2, 2021. Authorities said that he still had five months left to serve from earlier convictions, plus two more months for good measure. He was released on July 25, 2022. Vaccaro’s most recent arrests were during widespread protests of the American-run MUOS military satellite ground station in Sicily.

* April actions in New Mexico & Nevada deserts
------------

There are two opportunities in April to protest drones and nuclear weapons in the New Mexico and Nevada deserts: 1) the Sacred Peace Walk is an interfaith journey starting in Las Vegas, with a stop at Creech drone base and ending with an action at the Nevada National Security Site (formerly the Nevada Test Site), and 2) a Spring Action Week to Shut Down Drone Warfare will take place at Holloman Air Force Base in NM, a drone training base.
