Iraq – 20 Years On: A War That Should Never Have Happened
A report released this week by the Costs of War Project estimates that between 550,000-580,000 people have been killed since March 2003 in Iraq and Syria and “several times as many may have died due to indirect causes such as preventable diseases.”
It goes on to say that “more than 7 million people from Iraq and Syria are currently refugees, and nearly 8 million people are internally displaced in the two countries.” These devastating statistics tell us more of what we already know: the Iraq War was an utter disaster and the perpetrators should be brought to justice.
This coming week marks 20 years since the invasion led by George Bush and Tony Blair. Stop the War is marking the anniversary with an evening of remembrance and analysis from Iraqi activists and other leading anti-war figures including Lowkey, Sami Ramadani, Raghad Al-Tikriti, Tariq Ali and Lindsey German. Plus a performance of You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know by Jan Woolf w/ Kika Markham and Alan Franks.
Tickets are almost sold out so if you wish to join us make sure you get yours now…
Tomorrow we’re taking to the streets to call out the government’s racist policies towards asylum seekers and refugees, many of whom are victims of wars fought by Britain. Out of desperation, Sunak and co have resorted to scapegoating some of the most vulnerable people on the planet in an effort to boost their poll ratings – how disturbingly low can they get?
We’ll be joining thousands of others to make it known that the majority of people in the UK are open to welcoming the victims of war and oppression so join us in London, Glasgow or Cardiff tomorrow to say it loud and say it clear: refugees are welcome here!
If you’re joining the London demo and fancy lending us a hand just click the button below. We’re meeting at 11am at Portland Place, just look for the Stop the War tent.
