The Environment Agency has issued three new environmental permits for a new nuclear plant at Sizewell. The permit will allow the station to operate, as well as dispose of radioactive waste, use standby power systems like diesel generators, and return seawater and other liquids into the Greater Sizewell Bay. The shutdown of the Xcel Energy’s nuclear plant in Minnesota last week killed at least 230 fish due to a change in the temperature of the Mississippi River. The plant was temporarily powered down to facilitate repairs of a leak – which over time had released 1.5 million litres of radioactive water and prompted fears it may have seeped into the ground.
