Stop the War

Stop the War has been campaigning alongside XR Peace and environmental groups to highlight that we can not tackle the climate crisis without cutting military activity. The impact of the world’s military on global emissions is estimated to be 5.5%. This means that if the world’s military was a country, it would have the fourth largest national carbon footprint on the globe. Yet military emissions failed to be more than side note in COP27.

The latest developments in the war in Ukraine are truly alarming. We are closer to a nuclear confrontation than we have been for a generation. Any such escalation would be catastrophic, not just for the people of Ukraine and Europe but for the entire planet. At the same time Western Powers are stoking tensions with China and some predict we could be fighting wars on two fronts by the middle of the decade. This madness must end.

At a time when the world is facing the threat of a nuclear war and a climate emergency, our government’s continued commitment to militarism and warfare demonstrates its true priorities. The government’s commitment to the climate is as hollow as its commitment to peace.
