War In Ukraine/NATO

  • Ukraine’s state-owned Energoatom has claimed that Russia is planning to evacuate more than 3,000 workers from Enerhodar - the city that services the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
  • A guest essay in The New York Times by historian Timothy Snyder on Vladimir Putin, the war in Ukraine, and nuclear threats.

Military Spending

  • Salon looks at US military spending: The statistics are stunning. This year’s proposed budget for the Pentagon and nuclear weapons work at the Department of Energy is $886 billion — more than twice as much, adjusted for inflation, as at the time of Eisenhower’s speech. The Pentagon now consumes more than half the federal discretionary budget, leaving priorities like public health, environmental protection, job training, and education to compete for what remains. In 2020, Lockheed Martin received $75 billion in Pentagon contracts, more than the entire budget of the State Department and the Agency for International Development combined.

AUKUS

  • CBC: Canada was left out of AUKUS — and a new report by a respected American think-tank says Ottawa must overcome its apparent indifference to the deal or risk being left behind by its allies.

UK Nuclear Energy

  • An opinion in The Herald by Vicky Allan about nuclear power after she takes a tour of the Torness nuclear plant.
  • Prevent, protect, consult – the NFLA’s three priorities for UK radioactive waste policy

Nuclear Energy

  • US regulators OK spent nuclear fuel facility in New Mexico.
  • Spiked Online is the latest outlet to follow pro-nuclear talking points calling Germany’s phase-out of nuclear power a “colossal error.”
  • The Italian parliament has unveils AP300 small modular reactor.
