The G7 leaders said “we paid our respects” to the Hiroshima dead at the Peace Park. But their statement did quite the reverse and included an acceptance of nuclear weapons as a “deterrent” while fiercely promoting nuclear power expansion. At the Trident submarine base in Washington state, while the G7 leaders failed to act, peace protesters reminded the world of the terrible consequences should nuclear weapons ever be used again.

Paying respects at a Hiroshima park is about as useful as thoughts and prayers if the gesture isn’t followed by real substance. But the G7 leaders meeting in that historic city used the occasion to condemn Russia, China, North Korea and Iran without once reflecting on their own nuclear weapon expansion and their part in inciting greater nuclear risks. A blocade for peace
Meanwhile, peace protesters outside the gates of the US Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Washington state, sent a very different message with a clear statement that the possession and use of nuclear weapons is both immoral and illegal.
