STOP BRAVERMAN’S POWER GRAB

Posted: 19th June 2023

Our case against Suella Braverman has got off to an explosive start.

So many people have quickly recognised the threat parliamentary democracy is facing, and hundreds of you have joined Liberty to defend it.

Our task now is to grow this movement and build the public case against the Government’s actions. We need to make everyone across the UK aware of the danger that is posed to democracy.

The Home Secretary is trying to change the legal definition of ‘serious disruption’ to ‘more than minor’ – giving police almost unlimited powers to shut down protests.

Parliament has already explicitly rejected this during votes on the Public Order Act, but Braverman is trying to ignore it.

No government minister should have the power to override Parliament like this.

Spread the word – sign and share our statement to reject this power grab.

As we have seen, much of this government’s agenda has been designed to shut down forms of accountability.

Criminalising various protest tactics, introducing harmful and unnecessary voting ID requirements, and preventing many asylum seekers from accessing Human Rights Act protections – these are just some of the measures that are either in force or being introduced by the current Westminster government.

What these moves all have in common is that they enable government ministers to dodge basic democratic accountability.

This latest move by Suella Braverman is yet another dangerous development in ministers’ approach to governing. Like you, we couldn’t sit back or remain silent.

Let’s speak out together – sign our statement to reject Braverman’s power grab.
