A Week That Underlines the Desperate Need for Peace in Ukraine
There’s a week to go until our #PeaceNow Day of Action and the events of the last week highlight the urgent need for an end to the hostilities in Ukraine. The short-lived Wagner rebellion exposed the volatility inherent in Putin’s ill-conceived invasion of Ukraine while a Russian missile attack on a pizza restaurant in Kramatrosk, killing 11, showed the devastating human toll that the war is having.
As Stop the War founder, Andrew Murray, wrote in reaction to Prigozhin’s insurrection:
“The adventure is a product of the failure of Russia’s war to achieve its objectives in Ukraine. Indeed, Wagner boss Prigozhin has belatedly declared that the whole invasion last year was unnecessary and predicated on lies.
The bizarre agreement ending Wagner’s march on Moscow leaves everything unresolved. Many Russians appear to share Prigozhin’s frustrations with the military hierarchy.
Between Prigozhin and Putin there is nothing to choose. Russia’s brave anti-war movement, facing state harassment, are the only Russian political forces deserving of solidarity at present.”
We have to show our solidarity with that movement at NATO conference. Urgent de-escalation is needed but Western leaders show little sign of re-assessing their bellicose approach. It’s crucial that we’re out on the streets putting forth the case for peace and negotiation.
