War In Ukraine/NATO
- CND slams NATO summit for having ‘no initiative for peace’, writes The Morning Star with comments from Kate.
- There’s “no real prospect of Putin using nuclear weapons,” Joe Biden told a press conference on Thursday. The comments come almost a month after Biden suggestedthat the chances of Russia using a nuclear weapon was “real.”
- The UN’s nuclear watchdog is denied reports that Wagner mercenaries were seeking to obtain nuclear weapons from a Russian base during its abortive mutiny in June.
AUKUS
- The Conversation looks at supposed technology sharing between the US, UK, and Australia under the AUKUS pact, but complains that Washington will need to change its trade control restrictions in order to do so.
- A spin-out company from Sydney University has been AUS$1 million contract to develop quantum sensors under the AUKUS pact.
UK Nuclear Weapons
- The Glasgow-based offshoot of French firm Thales has won a £169 million contract to develop periscopes for Britain’s new Dreadnought-class nuclear-armed submarines.
Nuclear Testing
- The foreign minister of the Marshall Islands has called for more US compensation over the legacy of massive US nuclear testing to enable the renewal of a strategic agreement governing bilateral relations.
UK Nuclear Energy
- A report by the UK’s all-party intelligence and security committee (ISC) has warned that the government is moving at a “glacial pace” to concerns that Chinese companies will have control over its nuclear power infrastructure.
- Tory Skills Minister Toby Perkins has toured the Nuclear Skills Academy in Derby.
