NoFirstUse Global will be at the 2023 NPT Prep Com (officially the Meeting of States Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in preparation for the 2026 NPT Review Conference) which takes place at the United Nations in Vienna from July 31-August 11. The NPT Prep Com provides an opportunity for governments and civil society to discuss nuclear risk-reduction, non-proliferation and disarmament issues and proposals.

NoFirstUse Global will present the Declaration of Public Conscience Nuclear Taboo from Norm to Law to the NPT Prep Com, cosponsor a side event on the topic Nuclear Risk Reduction – 90 seconds to Midnight, and promote the working paper we presented to the 2022 NPT Review Conference entitled No-first use of nuclear weapons: An exploration of unilateral. bilateral and plurilateral approaches and their security, risk reduction and disarmament implications

Nuclear Taboo from Norm to Law

NoFirstUse Global launched Nuclear Taboo from Norm to Law in April this year in order to follow-up the ground-breaking statement affirmed by the G20 Leaders in their Bali Summit Declarationthat “The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible.”

Nuclear Taboo from Norm to Law calls for the G20 affirmation to be enshrined as a dictate of international law in order to rule-out any initiation of nuclear war and to pave the way for the global abolition of nuclear weapons. It also calls on the nuclear armed and allied states to implement this norm in their security policies, starting with the adoption of no-first-use commitments.

Nuclear Taboo from Norm to Law has been endorsed by over 1000 legislators, youth, academics/experts, religious leaders and civil society leaders from around the world.
