The call for peace in Ukraine is growing louder. In recent weeks, the war has entered another critical phase. Ukraine’s counteroffensive is not going as planned and Ukrainians are still battling through the Russians’ forward defences as it continues to engage in a ruthless campaign to knock out critical infrastructure in Ukraine. Casualties in this war are very high.
As the fighting drags on, the fact that there is stalemate in the war is becoming increasingly clear. A ceasefire and peace talks are the only solution, but the solution is continually blocked by our own government and their allies, turning a blind eye to the devastating human toll that the war is having. It also raises the question of how the government continues to fuel the war by sending arms on an increasingly devastating scale.
Money for arms comes from taxpayers, while the government claims not to have the funds to give public sector workers a desperately needed pay rise. All the time, the prospect of wider war looms, including a possible nuclear conflict.
We cannot allow this to happen. It’s crucial that we continue to put forth the case for peace and negotiation.
