The French nuclear sector boasts that its monopoly has resulted in the cheapest electricity in Europe. But it’s a complete fairy tale, argues Axel Mayer, with enormous hidden costs that could end up bankrupting the French state. The Golden Rule, originally a protest boat against US atomic tests in the Pacific, has set sail again, to call for nuclear abolition but also international solidarity.

The price of electricity in France is only apparently cheap because the costs are hidden in taxes rather than on electric bills. Between EDF’s debts, the price of retrofitting aging reactors and the eventual costs of decommissioning, the French public will pay. Indeed, the nuclear industry could actually bankrupt the French state even without a nuclear accident that could still happen at any time. READ MORE

A whole new mission

Originally intended to protest the US atomic tests in the Marshall Islands, the Golden Rule has now been sailing closer to home, educating people about the importance of the nuclear ban treaty. But she is also an effective tool for international solidarity and friendship. In New York, a Cuban diplomatic delegation (pictured) came on board to express their appreciation to the Golden Rule crew for their earlier visit to Cuba. READ MORE
