War In Ukraine/NATO

• IAEA warns of threats to besieged Ukrainian nuclear plant as fighting flares.
• Kim Jon Un has taken his armoured train to Russia for a meeting with Vladimir Putin – who is currently in the eastern city of Vladivostok. Reuters has a fact box on what to look out for from the summit.

Lakenheath

• Night flights are taking place at RAF Lakenheath this month, with future exercises taking place on 14, 18, and 21 September.
• “I know we’ve been overwhelmed with bad news of late, but I’ve yet to read of any concerns about the greatest threat of all – nuclear war”, writes Jenny Hayes to The Guardian.

Nuclear Energy

• French nuclear group Orano is halting uranium processing at one of its sites in Niger, following international sanctions in reaction to the country’s recent coup. 
• Beyond Nuclear on the troubles within the French nuclear industry.
• Romania will be the first country outside of the US to have small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) technology.

Nuclear Waste

• A new partnership between Japan and the UK will see research teams from the two countries collaborating on technology to improve nuclear waste disposal.

North Korea

• The Telegraph: North Korea’s bodged nuclear-missile submarine will be very dangerous – to its crew. A propaganda stunt, or something more capable?

Fukushima

• Associated Press: The operator of the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant said Monday that it has safely completed the first release of treated radioactive water from the plant into the sea and will inspect and clean the facility before starting the second round in a few weeks.
• Japan PM Kishida spoke about Fukushima water release with G20 leaders.

Iran Nuclear Deal

Peace

• Nuclear Free Local Authorities is backing the recent call of an Oldham Councillor for the preservation of the town’s nuclear bunker in the name of peace.
