Between 1965 and 1973, while forcibly removing the Indigenous community of the Chagos Archipelago to make way for a US military base, the United Kingdom received a $14 million discount for its purchase of American nuclear missiles. Sadly, the Chagos story is just one more in a long list of such nuclear-motivated human rights abuses.

Bartered and banished for nukes
A Human Rights Watch report has revealed the true scale of racist colonialism involved in creating the Diego Garcia US military base (pictured) in the Chagos Archipelago. The base serves as a staging ground for nuclear missile-armed submarines but was created at the cost of an entire Indigenous population banished from their islands. As “compensation” for the cost of evicting the Chagossians, the UK was sold cut price nuclear weapons by the US. READ MORE
