October 2 International Day of Nonviolence

Posted: 2nd October 2023

Today (October 2) is the UN International Day of Non-Violence. It is commemorated on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and a pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.

The International Day was established by the UN General Assembly to ‘affirm the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence… disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness” and “secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence”.

Let us remember Gandhi’s wise counsel: “Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.”
Let us heed his words today and re-commit ourselves to this essential purpose.
