When Western Shoshone elders, Carrie and Mary Dann, won the Right Livelihood Award in 1993, Carrie made an impassioned acceptance speech about tradition, land rights and the illegal US atomic tests that decimated everything. A melting pot or a boiling mess?
For Indigenous people, Carrie Dann said, the US is not a melting pot but a “boiling mess”. Dann, who died in 2021, was calling out the environmental degradation across the country, felt particularly hard by her Western Shoshone people on whose lands more atomic tests were conducted than anywhere on Earth.
