Coming soon: Liberty is taking the Government to court for undermining our democracy by making anti-protest laws it had no power to create.

Last year, Parliament rejected a Government move to change the definition of “serious disruption” in protest law to mean “more than minor”. Shockingly, the Home Secretary at the time, Suella Braverman, ignored Parliament and changed the law through the back door.

This is undemocratic, unconstitutional and unacceptable. We’re going to court to scrap it.

Braverman is no longer at the Home Office, but our fight against her decision continues.

No matter where we’re from, our backgrounds, or who we vote for, most of us want our elected leaders to work within the law and not abuse their powers.

After all, what would society look like if government ministers could simply do whatever they like and override Parliament? Would it be a democracy?

This isn’t a rhetorical question. It is the principle at the heart of this case.

Governments must be accountable to Parliament. And if Parliament rejects something, the Government must not sneak it through by other means.
