As the slaughter of innocents in Gaza continues and a resurgent NATO escalates tensions around the globe, military expenditure is off the Richter scale.
Global defence spending increased by 9% to a record $2.2tn during 2023. The UK’s defence secretary has called for the UK to up its military spend to at least 3% of GDP and has even said the budget should rise by as much as 50% in response to the invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s war in Gaza. Yet there’s no money for decent homes, our crumbling schools or an NHS in crisis.
