This Saturday, 30 March, marks Land Day when Palestinians reassert their commitment to their struggle against dispossession and displacement from their homeland. There has never been a more important time to demonstrate our solidarity. Will you join us on Saturday as we march in London to call for an immediate end to Israel’s violence, and for justice for the Palestinian people? On Monday the United Nations Security Council finally voted to demand an immediate ceasefire. The resolution calls for ‘the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip’ and importantly ‘reiterates its demand for the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance’. For the first time, the USA abstained instead of blocking the resolution and Britain voted for it. This significant shift in position comes in response to huge public pressure and the massive ongoing demonstrations here and around the world in opposition to Israel’s attacks. Although welcome, this vote does not go nearly far enough.
Israel is now in clear violation of the UN’s demand that it stops its assault on the Palestinian people of Gaza. 32,000 Palestinians have been killed in a relentless campaign of violence that the International Court of Justice says plausibly amounts to genocide. We must keep up the pressure to ensure that this UN resolution is implemented and call on governments to go further. A temporary pause will not avert a humanitarian catastrophe. We must continue to demand an end to Israel’s genocidal assault, the complete lifting of its cruel siege on Gaza, and a permanent ceasefire.
Our protests are having a real impact. We need another massive turnout on Saturday to show that we will not give up. You can join the march at 12noon at Russell Square, London, or follow this link for details of the shorter accessible route and assembly points for the Trade Union and Jewish blocs.
Join us on the streets of London for Land Day this Saturday and help us send a clear message to the government – we will not stop marching until a permanent ceasefire is secured, and we will never stop campaigning until Palestine is free.
In solidarity,
Peter
