Yesterday, petition delivered to Downing Street calling on the government to immediately stop all arms trade with Israel

Posted: 17th April 2024

In just 10 days, nearly 70,000 of you signed our petition calling on the government to immediately stop all arms trade with Israel. Yesterday, we delivered the petition into Downing Street with a cross-party group of MPs, taking your voice direct to the government.

We need to keep demonstrating the strength of support for Britain to stop arming Israel. Join our stop arming Israel protest today at 6pm outside Parliament (at Old Palace Yard).

It is shameful that six months in to Israel’s genocidal assault in Gaza, the UK government continues to supply Israel with weapons and military technology to attack Palestinians.

Now, Israel’s actions are raising the prospect of regional war. The UK government must take urgent steps to support de-escalation, including by calling for a permanent ceasefire, pressuring Israel to lift the inhumane and unlawful siege on Gaza, refunding UNRWA, and introducing  an arms embargo as a first step towards ending UK complicity in Israel’s attacks on Palestinians.

The voices supporting an end to the arms trade with Israel are growing. The United Nations Human Rights Council, the top human rights body at the UN, has called on all states to place an arms embargo on Israel. Earlier this month, 1000 lawyers, academics and retired judges, including the former President of the Supreme Court Baroness Hale, signed an open letter and legal opinion noting that the continued supply of arms to Israel puts the UK in breach of its obligations under international law.

The arms trade with Israel is also financed by banks like Barclays, who bankroll the companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology.

This Saturday 20 April actions are taking place in towns and cities across Britain, demanding that the UK government, and Barclays bank, stop arming Israel.

Despite facing such devastating violence, Palestinians continue to resist Israeli apartheid and demand freedom. Our movement in solidarity with their struggle continues to grow. It’s so important we continue to take meaningful action.

See you at the protest at Parliament later today, and then at your local action on Saturday.

In solidarity,

Lewis
