The European Convention on Human Rights is crucial to protecting rights and holding the Government accountable

We all want to live in a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Our recent polling shows 84% of people want the Government to protect everyone’s rights and freedoms equally.

Achieving this dream is a big task, but it starts with defending the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

Find out how the ECHR has made the UK a better place – and how you can do your bit to defend it.

5 WAYS THE ECHR MAKES THE UK A BETTER PLACE

The European Convention on Human Rights is crucial to protecting rights and holding the Government accountable.

It puts into law the fundamental rights we’re all now familiar with – like the right not to be killed, or tortured, or enslaved. It protects everyone equally. It forces authorities to respect your rights, and gives you the power to challenge them if they don’t.

People have used the ECHR to win real progress on matters ranging from disability rights, to LGBT rights, to workers’ rights and more.

5 WAYS THE ECHR MAKES THE UK A BETTER PLACE

The UK was one of the first states to sign up to the ECHR in 1951, in the aftermath of the Second World War.

But now, various Government ministers, journalists and talking heads are floating the idea of dragging the UK out of it. This would be an enormously harmful move, taking away one of our ways of challenging public authorities when they abuse us.

Liberty will always defend the UK’s membership of the European Convention on Human Rights.
