Write to your MP: Palestinians urgently need UNRWA’s assistance now as they face famine across the Gaza Strip

Posted: 1st May 2024

In January the UK government suspended funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in response to Israeli accusations against the agency. Last week, an independent review confirmed Israel’s allegations to be baseless and without evidence. Palestinians urgently need UNRWA’s assistance now as they face famine across the Gaza Strip. Please write to your MP demanding action.

With Israel using starvation as a tool of war, it couldn’t be more important to have UNRWA properly funded. As the most significant humanitarian agency working in Gaza, UNRWA’s work is necessary for the effective distribution of essential food aid.

UNRWA is the primary international organisation safeguarding the rights of Palestinian refugees. As such, it is frequently targeted with politically motivated smear campaigns from Israel. On the day the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled there is plausible evidence Israel is committing acts of genocide, Israel sought to deflect international attention by launching its own attack against UNRWA with unfounded accusations.

Despite the crucial role UNRWA plays distributing aid to Palestinians in Gaza, the UK government – along with others – responded to the unsubstantiated Israeli allegations by suspending funding to the agency. Other countries have since reinstated their funding to UNRWA.

The UK government previously said it was waiting for the findings of the independent review before deciding on whether to reinstate funding to UNRWA, but since its publication has still failed to do so. This is why we need to ramp up pressure now.
