Liberty: The Government is Fighting Back

Posted: 22nd May 2024

Did you hear the news? We won our case against the Government’s undemocratic anti-protest law.

Last summer, then-Home Secretary Suella Braverman changed the definition of “serious disruption” in protest law to mean “more than minor” – giving police huge power to shut down protests.

We argued it was undemocratic, unconstitutional, and unacceptable. Yesterday, the Court said it was unlawful – a big victory for democracy.1

But now the Government is appealing against the decision, and we need your help.

We’ll be back in court, fighting this every step of the way. We’re more determined than ever to win.

We’re in this for the long haul, and we’re throwing everything we’ve got at this case.

Because this is about defending the principles of democracy and accountability.

In a democratic society, Government ministers must not be able to override the decisions of Parliament. But that is exactly what the Government has done in this case. We cannot let that go unchallenged.

If you agree, please help us fight against the Government’s attempt to have the judgment overturned. Become a Liberty member today.

We’re so proud of what we’ve achieved so far, and we could not have done it without your tremendous support. Thank you so much.

Best wishes,
