NATO and Climate Change: Toward a Joint Understanding and Response

Posted: 2nd July 2024

This report, by BASIC Senior Policy Fellow and Programme Manager Dr Gry Thomasen, explores NATO states’ policies on climate change and security, and offers recommendations for advancing NATO policies on climate security.

The report shows NATO member states have in general terms a common understanding of climate change’s impact on security. Despite this, however, they are at very different stages in adapting their defences to its effects and aligning their defences to contribute to its mitigation.

The report is part of BASIC’s Risk Reduction project on ‘Adapting and Understanding the Impact of Climate Change on Security’, generously funded by the Government of Canada’s Department of National Defence via the Targeted Grant Engagement.

This Emerging Voices Network (EVN) anthology, edited by BASIC Policy Fellow Anahita Parsa, presents policy papers and recommendations written by five EVN Working Groups which explore the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons agenda (HINW) within the context of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and efforts to strengthen it.

The anthology focuses on engaging the P5, the role of civil society, nuclear education, nuclear safety and security, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. It offers insights and solutions from emerging researchers and highlights the importance of addressing humanitarian impacts in nuclear policy.

The anthology is part of the EVN’s Policy Cycle on the Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons, generously funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway.
