Proliferation of nuclear weapons is an ongoing concern, yet Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States continue to further develop AUKUS, an expanded trilateral security partnership that delivers nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, widening nuclear weapons risks, says Jemila Rushton of ICAN Australia.

Under AUKUS, Australia is committing billions of dollars to both the US and UK submarine industry facilities, potentially enabling the further development of nuclear armed capability in these programs. The AUKUS nuclear submarine deal could undermine the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, increase regional tensions, lead to proliferation, and threaten nuclear accidents in the ocean. READ MORE
