Netanyahu is in Washington

Posted: 25th July 2024

Netanyahu is in Washington. Rather than being arrested as a war criminal he has been welcomed with red-carpet treatment and given the honour of addressing Congress. This comes only a week after our own Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, shook hands with the international pariah.

The day before Netanyahu’s trip was one of the bloodiest in Gaza, when the IDF again attacked the civilian populated Khan Younis. 90 people were killed and 150,000 forced to flee with only a few minutes’ notice. The death toll of Palestinians in Gaza is approaching 40,000; those still alive are destitute and ravaged by hunger.

This international recognition of Netanyahu gives him the opportunity to show himself as a global statesman just as his popularity at home reaches to rock bottom.

Thankfully, the American public are not as welcoming as their law-makers. Thousands descended on the capital to demonstrate in what has been called a ‘day of rage’ by protest organisers. Here too we must continue to protest as loudly as we can, demand an end to arms sales to Israel and insist that our government supports the ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu.
