Speaking at the London Region CND Hiroshima Day commemoration in Tavistock Square on Tuesday, CND General Secretary Kate Hudson paid tribute to the victims and spoke about the escalating nuclear dangers caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East. Greater Manchester & District CND sent in this picture from Saddleworth Peace Group’s recent Hiroshima Day commemoration in Uppermill.

Salisbury CND held their annual Hiroshima and Nagasaki lantern float on Tuesday evening. The lanterns were decorated and sent to the group by students from Kyoso Junior High School in Hiroshima. You can find more pictures and coverage from the evening on their website here.

An evening of anti-nuclear chess with CND, 27 August

The original CND badges were made from clay, fired at a great heat, so they would be one of the only human-made objects able to survive a nuclear war. This was in the mind of Youth & Student CND member and MA Art and Politics student, Amba Malekin-Goneni, when devising her dissertation project: creating a ceramic chess set that would symbolically survive a nuclear war.
 
Supporters are invited to join Amba for the inaugural game with the set; she will be facing formidable opposition in CND General Secretary Kate Hudson. In between the castling and checkmates, Amba will interview Kate about the challenges and opportunities facing the anti-nuclear movement today, in what should be a fascinating discussion.
