Take action: no to Barclays buying Tesco Bank

Posted: 8th August 2024

Barclays has announced plans to purchase the retail banking arm of Tesco Bank. Under the deal, Barclays will use the Tesco brand to offer products to consumers.

This could deceive the public, denying them the ability to avoid using Barclays because of its grave complicity in Israel’s crimes against Palestinians. Barclays must not be allowed to hide behind the Tesco brand.

Take action today and write to Tesco Bank to demand the planned sale does not go ahead.

Barclays is deeply complicit in Israel’s genocidal assault on Palestinians in Gaza. The bank provides billions worth of financial services to arms companies supplying Israel with the weapons and military technology it is using in its attacks on Palestinians.

As a result, we’ve called for a boycott of the bank. Thousands of former Barclays customers have shut their accounts on our mass account closure days this year, while many more have pledged not to hold an account with Barclays while it is complicit in Israel’s atrocities. If you’re still a Barclays customer, pledge to join the next mass account closure day on 12 September here.

Barclays is feeling the pressure. It was forced to end its sponsorship of all festivals this summer as hundreds of bands and artists refused to perform at Barclays sponsored events.

The bank should not be allowed to use the Tesco brand to hide from accountability over its complicity in Israel’s human rights abuses.

Tesco Bank is obliged to share any objections it receives with the High Court, which must approve the sale before it goes ahead. We need as many people objecting as possible to scupper the proposed deal.

If the sale goes ahead, we’ll be calling for a boycott of Tesco Bank as part of our call for a boycott of Barclays. We’ll make sure to keep you updated.
