Dear Friends,

 

I hope you have all had an enjoyable summer, despite the horrors which pull at our hearts. Sometimes you have to let go to see more clearly, and whether that be Gaza, climate change, or the militarization of women, we know there is much to be done, but we have to pick our battles. NATO is a clear front runner for attention as it cuts across many of the moral and ethical principles we hold dear.

 

Whether you are new to us, or a longstanding friend, be sure we are all pulling together on this. The truth about NATO is little understood, and our work is to highlight the terrible reality of this nuclear armed warmongering organisation and to campaign for its abolition. Medea Benjamin and David Swanson have a new book out - “NATO: What You Need to Know” as Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs observes in the introduction, the organization is “a war machine run amok” with an “utterly dismal track record” of military forays that have led to years, and sometimes decades, of destabilization in the targeted countries

  1. Building on their long-standing partnership (!) NATO and Iraq have launched a political dialogue process. A delegation of high-level Iraqi officials led by the National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji, visited Alliance Headquarters for discussions with senior NATO officials. (This is kind of sick, considering what NATO countries did to Iraq, but I imagine the general long term strategy is to manipulate the struggling Iraq into NATO as a bastion of neo-colonialism and to weaken it’s democracy.– ED) NATO – News: NATO and Iraq launch high-level political dialogue, 27-Aug.-2024

 

  1. The United States has approved the sales of advanced missiles to NATO members Norway and Romania that are collectively worth almost $1 billion. (It’s hard to remember a time when the US could survive without the Military Industrial Complex- ED)
