Nuclear reactors are slow, expensive and dangerous, especially when caught up in a war zone as they currently are in Ukraine and Russia. The IAEA’s Director General, Rafael Grossi, is simultaneously increasing the risk of a nuclear accident, “albeit inadvertently”, write M.V. Ramana and Jixiang Wang, “by calling for building more reactors” even while warning the leaders of Russia and Ukraine that they are risking a “severe nuclear accident” that would “know no borders.” It’s a clear conflict of interest, they say.
