Nuclear weapons as a policy issue is virtually invisible in the current presidential campaign of either candidate. But, writes Jackie Cabasso, national security policy has been remarkably consistent since World War II, no matter who is in power.

“Deterrence” has always been reaffirmed as the “cornerstone” of US national security policy and the Biden administration has already approved a plan to launch a new arms race against Russia and China. Harris promises the US would have the “most lethal fighting force in the world” under her presidency while Trump claims he would prioritize nuclear weapons over all other security programs.
