Technology, Artificial Intelligence, the Military and War

In marking this year’s Keep Space for Peace Week, October 5-12, Safe Tech International partnered with Irene of eyemind concepts for the design and production of a 6-page brochure on the impacts of technology and AI on the military and war. A printable 2-sided, 3-paneled brochure for in-person events is forth-coming.
The brochure functions as a kind of primer on how technology and AI have changed the nature of war. It covers the three new domains of war that are directly dependent on Electromagnetic Superiority which itself relies on a vast network of digital technology, particularly, wireless infrastructure – cell towers, satellites, cellphones, smart cities, the IoT, surveillance cameras, etc.
Digital technology and AI are exponentializers, force multipliers, and accelerators. When applied to a given system, they increase the efficiency, speed, ambit of effect, and the development of subsequent innovations. The Military Industrial Complex may view this as promising, for tech and AI increase economic growth and military might. But to those of us more concerned about planetary overreach and the horrors of war, we understand that a more lethal military poses a great threat to all Life on Earth.
Understanding the deep connection between tech/AI and military might can inform our work for peace as well as for efforts to rein in the current non-consensual tech Tsunami for any number of other reasons – impacts on health, the environment, privacy/surveillance, energy consumption, e-waste/pollution, space debris, psychosocial effects, conflict minerals, deep sea mining, etc.
We are a clever species but have lost our way forsaking Life in pursuit of monetary gain, perpetual growth, dominance, and war.
Until we pivot to a more values-based civilization, tech and AI are bound to only increase – not lessen – violence, war, and the Metacrisis.
