Globally, we’re witnessing even further major escalations in the threat of nuclear weapons use.
In the last month alone, we’ve seen Russia change the conditions in which it would use nuclear weapons to now include conventional strikes by non-nuclear states that have the backing of nuclear powers. We’re also seeing the terrifying possibility of all-out war between two nuclear powers as Israel’s devastating military assault on Lebanon has been met with retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli military bases by Iran.
In more warming news, just today, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to the Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo. This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is receiving the peace prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.
Medact’s Nuclear Weapons Group, in the face of worsening loss of life and threat of annihilation, is continuing to come together and take action as part of a strong, international movement for complete nuclear disarmament.
