The main state perpetrators of violence against children are those armed with nuclear weapons, argues Tim Wright in his new report. That’s because when nuclear weapons are used, children are more likely than adults to die or suffer injuries, given their greater vulnerability to the effects of these deadly implements of war.

Children will suffer the most

Tens of thousands of children died as a result of the US atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Not only are they more vulnerable to harm from the effects of these weapons —heat, blast and radiation - they also depend on adults for their survival. This places them at higher risk of death and hardship in the aftermath of a nuclear attack, with family lost and support systems destroyed. And children
