Trying to add more nuclear reactors to an already faltering industry - whether in Maryland, USA or Suffolk, England - is an expensive and reckless enterprise. Our stories this week examine two such proposed schemes.
Feeling blue in Maryland
Maryland is typically one of the country’s more progressive states - although there have been Republican governors. But sadly, party politics, whether red or blue, promise a gloomy outlook when it comes to attitudes towards nuclear power. Capital—not labor - intensive
“Nuclear power is nothing if not hugely capital, not labor, intensive,” argue activists opposing the giant Sizewell C two-reactor project on England’s Suffolk coast. Unions should oppose the plan because “there will be no seamless transition of workers and supply chains from Hinkley,” as plant owner EDF has argued, referring to its current project in Somerset. The 900 long-term jobs created by Sizewell will cost tens of millions of pounds to create, money better invested in far higher numbers of jobs in the renewable energy sector. READ MORE
