Polling stations are opening up in the United States of America to welcome voters in the presidential election – potentially one of the closest and potentially most consequential in recent years. This week, we could see the first woman elected to the highest office in the United States, or witness the return to the White House of Donald Trump and his reactionary agenda.

What could the election mean for the rest of the world? This was the question asked in our recent online briefing with Senator Nina TurnerAmy Goodman of Democracy Now! and Mouin Rabanni, a Middle East specialist and co-editor of Jadaliyya.

If you missed it, you can watch the discussion online by clicking here.

You can also read this write up in the Morning Star by Linda Penz Gunther, which featured some of the discussion that took place on the call, as well as analysis of what the result could mean for the country itself.

Today, as the US votes our friends at Democracy Now! are doing a special show where you can see the reaction as polls close, and be the first to know which way the result may go. There will be one this evening, Tuesday from 8pm to midnight (EST; Wednesday 1am-5am UK time) and then the day after the election, on Wednesday morning an expanded, 2-hour show from 8 am-10 am EST (1-3 pm UK time). Click here to watch on YouTube or the button below to tune in live.

Whatever the result, we will continue to work with progressive organisations in the US to advance the cause of workers rights’, tackle the climate emergency and against wars & imperialist assault in the Global South.

Thanks for your support!
