Liberty is back in court to defend democracy.

Posted: 4th December 2024

The day has arrived – we are back in court to defend democracy.

You will remember that we won our landmark case against the Home Office last May, with the High Court ruling that previous Home Secretary Suella Braverman had acted unlawfully by completely ignoring the will of Parliament when creating new anti-protest laws. But the Court’s ruling was immediately appealed by the Government.

With a new Government elected in July, we hoped this appeal would be dropped. However, the new Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, is continuing to appeal this decision.

And so today, Liberty lawyers head to the Court of Appeal to defend our right to protest, and challenge this undemocratic, unlawful and unacceptable legislation.

We want to protect the rule of law and ensure no Government can run rampant over democratic process to pursue its own agenda. Accountability matters, and we hope that the court will agree once again.

If you would like a recap on the story so far, you can watch our video here and share it on social media and with your friends and family.
