According to US Forest Service and Nuclear Regulatory Commission data, about 20 percent of US nuclear power plants are located in areas with a high or very high risk of wildfires. So why does the NRC refuse to factor this danger into extreme license extensions, asks Beyond Nuclear’s Paul Gunter.

Fortunately, there were no nuclear power plants - this time - in the path of the latest catastrophic, climate-caused wildfires. The threat is obvious, documented, and for some plants, extremely high. And yet, the NRC insists preparing for and protecting from this risk is outside their scope.
