The Palestinian people demonstrate every day what it means to be truly steadfast. For the last 76 years, the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice has been a touchpoint for those struggling against colonialism and oppression across the world.
In 1959, when Che Guevara visited Al-Bureij refugee camp in Gaza, he recognised the devastation he saw there as only possible through the support of US imperialism. It’s said that he promised the Palestinians he met there that Cuba would denounce what he had seen there “before all of humanity.”
We are delighted to be co-hosting a series of events in London and Liverpool in the next week with Cuba Solidarity Campaign, featuring Che’s daughter, Aleida Guevara, in conversation with Omar Barghouti, the founder of the BDS movement for Palestine, and our very own Ben Jamal.

More information hereIt was this same trip in 1959 which opened up conversations between Guevara and those who would later be campaigning to end apartheid in South Africa. He understood then, as we understand now, that we must unite our movements against colonialism and oppression.
In the decades after Guevara’s visit, in 1973 Cuba severed diplomatic relations with Israel, and the people of Cuba today recognise their common struggle with the Palestinian people: against colonialism and imperialism, for dignity and self-determination.
Over the last 15 months we have seen Cuba keep Che Guevara’s promise from all those years ago, joining South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at The Hague, and, in 2024, making available 200 more fully-funded medical scholarships to Palestinian students.

More information hereCuba’s solidarity with Palestine, even as it faces one of the longest sanctions in history, is an inspiration to us all. Join us in London on Tuesday, and Liverpool on Thursday, to discuss the historic and ongoing solidarity between our movements.
In Guevara’s words: “Hasta la victoria siempre!” Towards victory, always.
In solidarity,
