World BEYOND War's 5th annual virtual film festival
Posted: 12th February 2025
I’d like to personally invite you to World BEYOND War’s 5th annual virtual film festival. Throughout the month of March, the film festival will explore the untold stories of nuclear weapons, in commemoration of Nuclear Remembrance Day (March 1). I was incredibly moved by these films and I know you will be too.
Here is this year’s film line-up:
-
NUKED (2023): The U.S. detonated 67 nuclear weapons over the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands during the Cold War, the consequences of which still reverberate down four generations to today. Using carefully restored archival footage to resurrect contemporaneous islanders’ voices and juxtaposing these with the fury of the nuclear detonations, NUKED starkly contrasts the official record with the lived experience of the Bikinians themselves.
-
ATOMIC HOMEFRONT (2017) reveals St. Louis, Missouri’s past as a uranium processing center for the atomic bomb, and the governmental and corporate negligence that lead to the illegal dumping of radioactive Manhattan Project waste. Focusing on a group of moms-turned-advocates, the film follows the women as they confront government agencies that are slow to provide aid, and the corporations behind the illegal dumping of dangerous radioactive waste in their backyards.
-
SAND STORM, the Sahara of the Nuclear Tests: This 2008 documentary aims to re-examine the French nuclear tests carried out in Algeria in the 1960s, rekindling the debates about France’s responsibilities in Algeria, its colonial past, and nuclear crimes. Through personal testimonies of soldiers and the Touareg nomads, the film allows us to understand how this military-scientific experiment proved to be dramatically uncertain on a human and environmental level, and still affects the daily lives of Algerian and French families.
How the film festival works:
- 1 ticket gets you access to all 3 films and 3 Zoom discussions.
- You will get the screening links to watch the films on your own time throughout the month of March.
- Join us live on Zoom on March 15, March 22, and March 29 to talk with key representatives from the films and special guests! The panel discussions will be recorded if you can’t join us live.
Many of us have read about the Manhattan Project and the nuclear testing of the 1940s-60s. But it is hard to conceptualize the scale of the impact. The documentaries in this year’s film festival help us do that, through archival and contemporary footage that centers the first-hand testimonies from front-line communities.
Yet, from the Bikinians in exile to the moms in St. Louis, those who are directly facing these inconceivable impacts don’t give up. They are community organizers and advocates, beacons of hope and resilience in the midst of pain. They are an inspiration to all of us to continue taking action.
I hope you will join us for this year’s film fest to hear these first-hand stories and to re-commit to working towards a world beyond war.
