[Sizewell B] is still going strong as it celebrates its 30th year of producing energy on Valentine’s Day – Friday, February 14. Today it is home to 600 employees and 250 contractors who between them produce 3% of the UK’s electricity. It’s estimated that overall this one site has contributed £15bn to the country’s economy and it lays claim to being the UK’s single most productive nuclear reactor. “It’s supposed to close in 2035 but we want to go to at least 2055,” explains Robert. They are currently putting together a proposal to try to achieve that, he adds. “If we get our life extension we will be here for another 40 years – or at least 30 years. Some American stations of this design have gone beyond 70 years,” he says. “Our design life is 40 years – we plan to go to at least 60 years.”
