Dear Campaigners,

We’re excited to announce that the new Don’t Bank on the Bomb report “At Great Cost: The companies building nuclear weapons and their financiers” has been launched today! The report, jointly published by PAX and ICAN, exposes 260 banks, pension funds and other financial institutions that continue to financially back the nuclear weapons industry.

The report analyzes in detail the involvement of 24 companies in the development, maintenance and modernization of nuclear weapons arsenals of China, France, India, the United Kingdom and the United States.

 Our findings:

  • The number of institutions with significant financial exposure to companies involved in the nuclear weapons industry has dropped by a quarter since the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force in 2021
  • Just under $270 billion was provided to the 24 nuclear weapon producing companies in loans and underwriting, a drop of $6.2 billion since the previous Don’t Bank on the Bomb report.
  • The total value of investments is higher than last year, but there’s no increase in the number of investors
  • US investors continue to dominate the top 10. Vanguard remains the biggest investor, with $87.5 billion invested in the nuclear weapon industry.
  • The top lenders are Bank of America, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase
  • There are almost no investments from financial institutions in countries that joined the TPNW.

Help spread the word:

  • It would be great if you could help share the report widely across your social media channels.
  • Check if your bank or pension fund is on the investor list. If so:
    • Reach out to them and encourage them to end financial ties with the companies building weapons of mass destruction.
    • Help us keep track of progress! Let us know when a financial institution has made a promise to change policy or practice.

Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about the report and its findings!

All the best,

Alejandra
